Inner Core Drain Cable Shrinkage

16th Jun 2022

DO YOU KNOW ABOUT SHRINKAGE?

Talking about shrinkage reminds us of that Seinfeld episode when George Costanza WAS IN THE POOL – it was cold!

For those of you who use inner core drain cable, you may be as mortified as George when you see no nylon strand sticking out from inside your high-tensile wire drain cable. But don’t worry – shrinkage is perfectly normal and will not affect performance.

We frequently see nylon cores shrink up to 12 inches within the cable.

Nylon material naturally lengthens when wet, and then shortens to 5-10% less than new when it’s dried. Nylon fiber is lightweight, handles a variety of weather conditions very well, and is abrasion resistant, making it an ideal material for the inner core of drain cable. Temperature has little impact on its flexibility or strength.

If you order inner core cable but can’t see the white nylon core inside, it doesn’t mean we sent you hollow core cable by mistake. It’s likely that the nylon has shrunk.

Inner core cable, even with some shrinkage, will provide you with the durability and long life you expect from this style of drain cable. The inner core guards against kinking and breakage, without adding much weight to the cable.

All of our drain cable is made in the USA from a proprietary, hard-drawn, high-tensile wire. We thoroughly test our cable before distribution, and guarantee it for 30 days.
